Raupo Bay Retreat
Raupo Bay Retreat is open for you to come and experience this secluded paradise. Situated between Okains Bay and Little Akaloa facing sunny north on the Banks Peninsula, New Zealand, the retreat has access to 2 private bays, revered in the area for its nice waves enjoyed by the more intrepid surfers.
The Tibetan word gompa is a contraction which is common, of the two words gom-meditaton and pa-building or place and can be translated as meditation hall, temple or place of meditation.
The gompa is home to many Tibetan statues, tankas (traditional paintings), and many interesting items for performing vajrayana empowerments and rituals. A private single bed in a simple kitchen and bathroom is available.
Ron built the Gompa with volunteer helpers from recycled material.
Any information, instructions and guidance on practice is available from the resident practitioners on request.
The main house on the retreat being one of the first colonial homesteads in the area dating from the 1880s holds much character. One can absorb themselves in the deeply profound books in the small library which contains the wealth of knowledge and experience of the precious teachings. Relax at the end of the day in the therapeutic ozone spa under the night stars while listening to the gentle wash of the ocean waves.
The retreat is run according to sustainable living principals, we build and live from recycled materials, eat whole foods and grow organic produce.
It is a nice place for solo or group retreats. We can accommodate up to 10 people in various rooms inside or up to 100 or so if people bring own tents.
You can enjoy walks to the beach or out to the points bordering the bay, swims, relax in the sun, read books, do some meditation and/or yoga. If you have a car you can explore the neighboring bays. Ask for a tour or join in a sustainable working project and learn about permaculture, organic gardening and building from recycled materials.
It is a relatively low-key and informal arrangement with generally only 1 or 2 people staying most of the year when there are no formal events planned. As such we prefer to be able to keep a reasonable amount of flexibility, as such please get in contact with us no more than 1 or 2 weeks before you want to visit. ie we do not accept bookings in advance except for group bookings.
